Nicola Farnon has been on Bebop Spoken Here’s radar
for some time. When the line-up for this year’s Darlington Jazz Festival
included an appearance by Ms Farnon it was the ideal opportunity to hear her.
The performance by Ms Farnon’s trio prompted the instant purchase of this CD.
A Day at the Market was recorded live in the community hall of
Farnon’s home village of Market Lavington, Wiltshire. Twelve tunes, all but one
of them standards, capture Farnon and ‘the boys’ (Farnon’s endearing reference
to Piero Tucci and Phil Johnson) as ‘live’ as it is possible to do at a gig.
The one Farnon composition – Perfect
Loverly Day – is quite simply
perfectly loverly! The standards include the opening track Let There Be Love (the playing is superb, swinging like nobody’s
business), Cheek to Cheek, This Can’t Be Love and The More I See You. Farnon combines swinging
bass playing (the girl has got a great sound) with a fabulous singing voice.
Pianist Tucci swings non-stop, think Dudley Moore or Oscar Peterson (he plays a
mean tenor sax too!) and drummer Phil Johnson ensures the swinging rhythmic
pulse doesn’t miss a beat.
A Day at the Market was recorded, mixed and mastered by Andrew
Cleyndert. No greater seal of approval than having Mr Cleyndert on board! The
CD has been on repeat play for days on end. Reservations? None. Unreservedly
