CD Review: Zoe Gilby - Twelve Stories

I hope this review doesn't cause a divorce! With only a few weeks to go I had Andy Champion's ACV album Busk down as my UK Album of the Year now along comes Zoe (Mrs Champion) with Twelve Stories - a contender if ever there was one!
Solution - a vocal category and a small band one!
I've heard Zoe develop her technique over the years from her first album (this is her third), via advice from Sheila Jordan and much experience on the road and across continents, but, much as I love the other two, this one is on a totally higher plane.
The material, much of it consisting of originals by Zoe and Andy, is compelling both lyric and music-wise. This isn't just jazz, well it is but it's also jazz theatre at its best. I've heard the group do several of these songs live but never quite like this. Apart from the originals, It Never Entered my Mind is sung so piercingly poignant that the casual listener could be excused for thinking that this too was a Gilby/Champion composition.
Caravan is a swinger and I loved it yet I did feel that it didn't quite fit with the other tracks. However, out of context, it was still as good a vocal version as I've ever heard and Richard had a great work out..
Zoe's regular quartet are superb in support and solo - listen to Mark and Andy when they take off - but the addition of Noel Dennis on trumpet, to me, is the icing on the cake.
We're not just talking jazz singer/bassist here - we're also talking composer/lyricist - Roll over Beethoven, Tell Lennon and McCartney the News!
