This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. GIJF Help wanted.

I wondered if readers could help me with my Festival decisions.  In deciding which jazz gigs to attend/avoid I frequently rely on the opinion of people whose opinions I respect.  Bireli Lagrene has been highly recommended to me, conversely he has been largely dismissed as little more than a technician.  So, should I invest my pension in a ticket or sit by the fire drinking cocoa and watching the TV?  Advice very welcome.

If I could only attend one Festival concert then Bireli Lagrene would be the one. A wonderful guitarist playing in a style reminiscent of 1960's Blue Note - bring it on!
The Jazz From The North afternoon sessions look promising and the opportunity to hear Jacqui Dankworth, Mark Nightingale and Jason Yarde with NYJO is also high on my agenda. Then there are the free sessions on the concourse...
