Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Jammin' @ The Hoochie

Pete Gilligan (pno) Mark Williams (gtr); Paul Susans (bs); Dan Reed (dms) + Richard Burns (tpt); John Pope (bs); Lindsay Hannon, Claire Kelly (vcls); Paul Gowland (ten) and A.N. Others.
(Review by Lance).
Pete's Quartet got the show on the road with some good old bop standards including Bud's Bubble - the intricate unison lines between Pete and Mark, reminiscent of Bird and Diz, are something to behold
.
Lindsay, in a red ensemble sang the blues. This was Ms. Hannon (who is here next week with her own band - Lindsay Hannon Plus) in powerhouse mode giving the old blues lines a contemporary feel - the wow factor was high.
John Pope occupied the bass chair and a guitarist whose name I missed also had a blast. On trumpet, a new name to me - Richard Burns, late of Melbourne. Stylistically from the minimalist school of Miles and Chet he impressed on There Will Never Be Another You finishing off with the now legendary Country Gardens quote.
More blues from Claire followed by her, now finely honed, version of Guilty. First chorus seemed to be marginally too low for comfort but by the final chorus it was well and truly nailed - nice one Claire.
Paul Gowland unpacked his tenor to join Claire for Beautiful Love and sent the wowmeter almost into uncharted levels.
This altitudinal mode was maintained when the two horns Leaped In a la Lester - Dan Reed too had his say on this one.
I could have stayed all night but the number 27 beckoned.
Great session.
Lance.
