Bebop Spoken There

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

CD Review - The Tingvall Trio: Vagen.

Martin Tingvall (pno); Omar Rodriguez Calvo (bs); Jürgen Spiegel (dms/perc.)
(Review by Lance.) In a few short years the Tingvall Trio has become known as one of the top young European Jazz ensembles, winning the prestigious German ECHO Jazz award twice (2010 and 2012) as “Best German Jazz Ensemble”. They are one of a series of piano trios following in the footsteps of the legendary e.s.t. using breathtaking ensemble work and beautiful melodies to bridge the gap between jazz and pop.
This CD is a typical, and at times rather beautiful, example of their work. The pieces are all by Tingvall and display a great deal of depth and originality. Vagen is reported to have entered both the German and Swedish pop charts - such is the quality of composition throughout they could, arguably, have also shown in the Classical listings! Having said that, this is no languid send you to sleep disc - there is also a lot of fire particularly on the mysteriously titled Tuc Tuc Man which, although written by the leader, may well have been inspired by Cuban double bassist Calvo. På Väg is a delicate, almost pastoral, piano solo whilst the final track, Efter Livet, has horns and a string section. A CD to whet your appetite for their forthcoming Pizza Express Jazz Club Soho date on June 20 - their first and currently only UK date.
