This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Find me something better to do on a Thursday afternoon in South Shields

The shrinking Maine Street Jazzmen played to an expanding audience at Rosie's this afternoon.
As always when trumpet man Harley is missing there is a sense of disappointment as Ray is a key figure. However, once the band get going with Herbie taking over the lead the absence of Ray becomes less pronounced and by closing time it was 'Ray who?'
I joke - hurry back King.
Drummer Mike was even humbler this week as he played without a bass drum! Such is the strength of Alan Rudd's basslines the rhythm section didn't stop swinging!
Soon, Olive took a Sentimental Journey Home and all three songs were spot on. Jim sang Gonna Get A Girl, Way Down Yonder, Avalon - Herbie sang the rest! It was a good afternoon with a good crowd.
