This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Trio VD @ The Cluny. February 23.

Trio VD: Chris Sharkey (guitar), Christophe de Bezenac (alto saxophone) & Chris Bussey (drums). Band of the moment Trio VD arrived in the Ouseburn Valley (a cultural hub in the city's east end) to play a set to an expectant crowd at the Cluny. All three musicians possess prodigious technique and it is this facility which enables them to perform a most demanding music, much of it at a searing pace.
The structure of each composition is memorised - itself a remarkable feat - and the lightning fast interplay is quite something to witness in a concert performance. Gateshead's Chris Sharkey was inventive throughout, developing an infinite number of patterns to which de Bezenac reciprocated in equal measure. At times it was difficult to tell apart lines and notes of guitar and horn so brilliant was the execution of ideas. Drummer Bussey, a vital element in the band, was a joy to watch as well as listen to. His playing was that of a virtuoso (it needed to be!) and demonstrated an innate musicality. A great Schmazz gig.
