Hil has pointed out to me that today was Art Blakey's birthday. Had he lived he'd have been 90. As it was he died in 1990. The anniversary of his death is on Friday - October 16 so let's remember perhaps the greatest modern jazz drummer and certainly the greatest hard bop band of them all. Lance

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Yes, it is working just fine.

I saw/heard Art and the Messengers a couple of times, including Band on the Wall in Manchester, in the early 80's, when jazz had begun to become so cool that there were - wait for it - young people in their 20's in the audience - we 30 Somethings were so put out! Jean Toussaint was the epitome of that cool with his tall sax style, slick grey suit and Ray-Bans. You could feel the warm love that Art felt for those Messengers - a love that's maybe not so obvious now? discuss!
