The last time the Mr Men played together was at St Augustine's and that was back in May 2019. Earlier this week Jeff Barnhart flew in from America for a first visit to these shores in a long while. He'd been looking forward to meeting up with the boys - John Hallam, Keith Stephen and Bruce Rollo - to catch up and play a few tunes. Darlington New Orleans Jazz Club's loyal audience turned out in force, a makeshift kitchen dispensing coffees and teas doing good business with the bar open for alcoholic beverages. In some ways it was as if the last two years hadn't unfolded in the way they did. All seemed (relatively) well with the world.

Cheltenham Jazz Festival: Saving Grace featuring Robert Plant @ Henry Weston Big Top - May 1

Robert Plant (vocals, percussion); Suzi Dian (vocals, accordion, guitar); Matt Worley (various string instruments, vocals); Tony Kelsey (various string instruments, vocals); Oli Jefferson (drums, percussion, vocals).

Every year Cheltenham stretches the boundaries of jazz beyond the recognition of almost everyone, sometimes giving a bog-standard chart act the Great American Songbook to take a stab at, or some other deception. Most festivals do this, but Cheltenham really stretches it, but it gets the crowds in and enables it to get all-sorts of jazz on.

 

I’ve struggled to make any real connection between Robert Plant and jazz, except I think he contributed to some ‘serious’ music, and – as one of the biggest stars on the planet – I doubt anybody was going to persuade him to do a bunch of Frank Sinatra songs.

Album review: Matt Gordy, Jazz Tonite Sextet- Be With Me

Matt Gordy (drums, arrangements); Chris Colangelo (basses); Ido Meshulam (trombones); Alan Pasqua (piano); Jeff Ellwood (sax); Ron Stout (trumpet, flugel); Sherry Williams (vocals).

A not unpleasant album that, whilst it doesn't attempt to push any boundaries (thank God!), is nonetheless, very listenable.

It had been sequestering in my intray since January, buried among the daily avalanche of CDs that are slowly, but surely, driving me to distraction before I closed my eyes and made a random selection.

Preview: Hexham Jazz Festival (Saturday 14, day 2/3)

The second day of this year's Hexham Jazz Festival features established names performing in Hexham Abbey and a double bill of Tyne Valley musicians in the Sele (the adjacent park) on Beaumont Street. Jo Harrop is undoubtedly in the upper echelons of British jazz singers and her appearance in Hexham is a real coup for festival organisers. Jo, originally from Chester le Street, arrives from London with an ace band in tow. Following Ms Harrop's concert, Saturday evening will conclude with a solo piano set by Dean Stockdale.

Jazz Festival Memories 2: Carol Kidd Trio @ Edinburgh Jazz Festival. August 30, 1982

The Edinburgh International Jazz Festival of 1982 was spread across the Scottish capital in a multitudinous cross-section of bars and hotels - all serving ales of the sponsoring brewery, Dryboroughs. 

It was a vintage year. Among the stars that season were Teddy Wilson, Humph, Dick Cary, Benny Waters and Jim Galloway as well as north east heroes the Savannah Syncopators. They all played brilliantly but, for me, the highlight was a wee Glaswegian singer that I'd never heard of - Carol Kidd.

Robert Cray @ Newcastle City Hall - May 6

The third of fourteen concerts in eighteen days, Robert Cray is once again touring Britain before heading back to America to hit the road again. The now veteran bluesman has maintained an insane touring schedule for something like fifty years. Quite why is anyone's guess, but here he was playing Newcastle City Hall. His old mucker for almost the entire time, Richard Cousins (he did take a short sabbatical way back when), was on Tyneside, as was Hammond B3 man Dover 'White Cliffs' Weinberg, last seen with Cray at Sage Gateshead, and drummer Les Falconer. 

Cheltenham Jazz Festival: Fascinada @ Parabola Arts Centre - May 1

Iain Ballamy (sax), Rob Luft (guitar), Huw Warren (piano), Conor Chaplin (bass guitar), Will Glaser (drums).

I didn’t initially realise I’d seen Ballamy and Warren in Quercus at Sage Gateshead a number of years ago. Quercus were a trio I’ve seen described as jazz-ish, though I tend to refer to them as a kind of folk-jazz hybrid, with celebrated singer June Tabor ensuring everybody goes home miserable, which folky types will confirm is no bad thing. I’d also seen Ballamy earlier that day in the Electric Ladyland Big Band.

 

An update on Rob Luft was also part of the motivation for my return to Cheltenham and he was back an hour after his impressive contribution to Laura Jurd’s set.

Jazz Festival Memories: 1 - Art Pepper at Newcastle Jazz Festival 1981

The festival season is well upon us. From the smaller, but no less important events such as Darlington and Hexham, to the higher profile events - Cheltenham, Scarborough, Wigan, Manchester, London (to mention but a few) - now's the time to think of booking your holiday either here or abroad or, if you'd prefer to stay closer to home, there's the Classic Jazz Party near Whitley Bay, the Newcastle Festival of Jazz and Improvised Music or, the reincarnated Newcastle Jazz Festival. All will be previewed closer to the time. With all this festivity in mind it got me to thinking about some of those festival concerts that have become eternally entrenched in my memory. This is the first.
