The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Ben Crosland Quartet @ the Moor Club, Stockport - Sept. 20

Ben Crossland (bass guitar); Rod Mason (soprano/ tenor sax);  Dean Stockdale (keyboards); Dave Tyas (drums).

Ben Crosland used the same lineup as he did on his previous visit to the Moor Club and it was great to hear Rod Mason playing so well on soprano sax and later on tenor. Most of the tunes played were written by Ben with the exception of some by Dan Grolnick and Bob Mintzer. I'm usually not all that keen on bands that feature a lot of their own compositions but I've got to confess I quite like Ben's  tunes which were to commemorate the release of his latest album.  

He seemed very pleased with the turnout this evening and once again there were plenty of musicians in attendance. Hard to pick out any highlights but I must mention that Dean Stockdale was on top form and his solos were at just the correct volume.  Dave Tyas, who many will recall from when he used be part of the Shades Of Kenton band did all that was required of him in this smaller unit but still has an energetic drumming style.  A most enjoyable evening!
