Bebop Spoken There

John McLaughlin: ''It was then that Coltrane came along and single-handedly brought this dimension of spirituality into jazz. It was a pivotal experience to me.'' (DownBeat September, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Coltrane @ the City Hall

Unsurprisingly the September issue of Jazzwise is, in the main, dedicated to John Coltrane. It being his centenary year there is a nine-page tribute to the great man. What is surprising is that, amongst those nine pages, there is a two page article by pianist, critic, author Brian Priestley writing about Coltrane's concert at Newcastle City Hall  on November 14, 1961.

I too was there and I hated it! At that stage of my lifetime journey into jazz Bird and Dizzy were about as far as I'd got. Fortunately the Dizzy Gillespie Quintet were top of the bill so at least I left without demanding my money back!

Interestingly, Priestley points out that whilst the national critics in the Mail, Express and Telegraph were For Coltrane, Benny Green in the Observer was against him.

Now here's the rub, Green actually wrote the programme notes! However, he chose his words carefully both to avoid offence and, no doubt, to ensure he got paid.

Of course, in retrospect, now I'd mortgage the house to see Trane, Dolphy, McCoy, Workman and Elvin Jones at the City Hall if Tardis Travel could transport me back to that day nearly 65 years ago... Lance

P.S. Were YOU at the concert? Your thoughts please.

Yes - I was there. I still have the programme. Like you I felt the Gillespie quintet made the evening memorable. Interesting to note the late (and great) Lalo Schifrin (printed in the programme as Schisrin) was on piano. Also the outstanding Mel Lewis on drums made up the quintet.
