Bebop Spoken There

John Donegan: ''What you take in through your ears can come out through your fingers.'' (Notes to Which Direction October, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Album review: Nicolas Meier World Group – Elysian Drift. (MGP Records)

Nicolas Meier (guitars); Alex Hutton (piano); Tom Mason (bass); Demi Garcia Sabat (percussion); Randolph Matthews (voice) + José  Almarcha (Flamenco guitar on A Night in Sant Cugat)

There are musicians who travel in search of inspiration and there are those whose music becomes a map of the places they have visited. Nicolas Meier belongs firmly in the latter camp. For years the Swiss-born, UK-based guitarist has built a musical language that comfortably inhabits jazz, Turkish folk traditions, flamenco, North African rhythms and contemporary European improvisation. On Elysian Drift, those influences don’t compete for attention—they coexist beautifully.

Inspired by journeys shared with his wife, artist Songul Yilmaz-Meier, whose evocative artwork graces the album cover, Elysian Drift feels less like a travelogue and more like a collection of memories. The destinations may stretch from the Mediterranean to the Middle East, but the real journey is emotional rather than geographical.

The opening rendition of Charlie Chaplin’s Smile immediately establishes the album’s warmth. Meier approaches the melody with enormous affection, resisting any temptation to overplay. It’s a reminder that, despite his formidable reputation as one of Europe’s finest guitarists, melody has always been at the heart of everything he does.

What follows is eleven pieces that demonstrate just how naturally this World Group functions as a genuine ensemble.

Richard Jones’ violin often becomes a second lead voice, weaving effortlessly alongside Meier’s guitars, while Tom Mason’s bass quietly anchors every rhythmic shift. Demi Garcia Sabat’s percussion provides the album with its heartbeat, adding colour rather than simply keeping time. Alex Hutton’s piano introduces space and lyricism throughout, culminating in his own composition, Clouds, one of the album’s most reflective moments. Randolph Matthews’ remarkable vocal textures appear almost as another instrument, adding atmosphere without ever distracting from the compositions, while José Almarcha’s guest appearance on A Night in Sant Cugat delivers an authentic flamenco voice that feels completely integral to the album’s narrative rather than an isolated guest spot.

That sense of collective musicianship is perhaps Elysian Drift’s greatest achievement. There is no sense of hierarchy here. Every player listens. Every player contributes. The result is music that breathes naturally, allowing ideas to unfold rather than simply showcasing virtuosity.

Tracks such as Discover the World, Colossal and Mystical reveal Meier’s remarkable ability to absorb influences without resorting to cliché. Turkish modes, flamenco flourishes and jazz improvisation become part of one coherent musical vocabulary. Nothing feels borrowed. Everything feels lived.

The sequencing deserves praise too. Beginning with Smile and concluding with Oscar Peterson’s Hymn to Freedom creates a satisfying emotional arc. Between those two familiar landmarks lies an album rich in original composition, with the title track, Kekova Sunset and Beneath the Turquoise painting vivid musical landscapes that remain melodic, inviting and endlessly engaging.

Production is equally impressive. Recorded between January and April 2026 at Slipway Studios and MGP Studios before being mastered by Marco Meniconi, the sound is warm, intimate and wonderfully balanced. Every instrument occupies its own space, allowing the intricate interplay between guitar, violin, piano and percussion to emerge with remarkable clarity.

Perhaps what makes Elysian Drift so rewarding is its complete absence of pretension. Although Meier’s technical command of fretted, fretless, twelve-string and glissentar guitars is extraordinary, there is never the feeling that technique is the destination. Every note serves the composition.

In many ways this is the album jazz needs at the moment. It celebrates cultural diversity without making that its headline. It reminds us that great music has always crossed borders naturally and that the strongest collaborations emerge through listening rather than leading.

Elysian Drift isn’t simply an excellent guitar record. It is a beautifully realised ensemble album from musicians who trust one another implicitly. Rich in melody, generous in spirit and endlessly rewarding, it confirms Nicolas Meier as not only one of Britain’s most distinctive guitarists but one of its most thoughtful composers.
