The second album by Five-Way Split maintains the high standard set by their 2023 debut album All the Way. The hard bop quintet still relates to the founding fathers of the idiom such as the Jazz Messengers or the Clifford Brown/Max Roach Quintet only this time re-imagining them in terms of today. It's not as raw as the originals, maybe a little softer around the edges which is no bad thing.
Grecian God of the saxophone Xenopoulos is that rare musician who conveys the impression that he's never ever blown a bum note or ran out of ideas in the middle of a fingerbustin' phrase - he creates the impression that any other note would be wrong.
In Collins he has the perfect foil. Together they form the ideal front line - Clifford and Harold Land, Lee Morgan and Benny Golson - Collins and Xenopoulos belong in there.
The heartbeat of Barron, Hofecker and Home couldn't be bettered - all are first callers for any visiting stars. They are stars in their own right as north easterners will find out on March 29 at the Globe when Five-Way Split are the featured band at the venue as part of Jazz Co-op's popular Sunday Night @ the Globe jazz concerts.
