Bebop Spoken There

Ethan Hawke (starring as Lorenz Hart in Blue Moon): ''Larry [Lorenz] Hart would be so happy that his music and his words and his poetry are still alive.'' - The Northern Echo 27 November 2025

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Swing Manouche @ The Green Tree, Bishop Auckland - August 31

Martin Winning (clarinet); Mick Shoulder (guitar); Dave Smith (rhythm guitar); Paul Grainger (string bass)

The Green Tree is a noted punk, rock and soul venue. This afternoon, the pub on Cockton Hill Road, situated just up the road from Bishop Auckland Railway Station, was hosting its very first jazz gig. As Mick Shoulder's Swing Manouche soundchecked in the pub's beer garden on this late summer afternoon, rain clouds gathered, threatening to rain on the jazz parade.

Album review – George Coleman with Strings (High Note Records, Inc.)

George Coleman (tenor saxophone); David Hazeltine (piano); John Webber (bass); Joe Farnsworth (drums); Café Da Silva (percussion); unlisted strings; Bill Dobbins (arranger and conductor)

In the early 1940s, Charlie Parker – who had a keen interest in both classical music and opera – expressed enthusiasm for recording an album with strings accompaniment. It would be nine years before Parker’s wish would be fulfilled. The legendary 1949 and 1950 recordings spawned other artists to embrace the format namely, Clifford Brown, Stan Getz, Wynton Marsalis, Bobby Hackett/Jackie Gleason, and others – even Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster. With George Coleman with Strings Jazz Master George Coleman joins this illustrious group. The recording done in 2022 offers seven selections with Coleman’s tenor accompanied by a small string ensemble.

Harlem - Eddie Carroll And His Swing Music - Parlophone R 2314

This interesting YouTube clip posted by Jonathan Holmes of Eddie Carroll and his Orchestra features British tenor sax legend (and racing driver) Buddy Featherstonhaugh as well as a nice chordal guitar solo from Fred Watson.

Preview: The Harlem Renaissance on Radio 3 - all week!

First broadcast in November 2022, this week's BBC Radio 3's Composer of the Week: The Harlem Renaissance is something of a departure from the programme's usual fayre as Wynton Marsalis guides presenter Donald Mcleod through the cultural firmament of post-WW1 Harlem, NYC. It's jazz all the way, from Take the 'A' Train to Dippermouth Blues to Sugar Foot Stomp through to When the Saints Go Marching InTune to Radio 3 at 4:00pm each day, Monday to Friday. Russell

Preview: Tonight @ the Globe (August 31) - Alexia Gardner Trio

© Ken Drew
Alexia Gardner has been ticking boxes here, there and everywhere since she settled in the north east after an illustrious, award winning international career. A style-setting singer whose very much a jazz singer and, even if she does occasionally wander down
roads less travelled  the jazz feeling is never far away.

With maestro Alan Laws on piano/keys and the ubiquitous Jude Murphy on bass and backing vocals the setting is a perfect way to bid goodbye to summer (hopefully without that song although if Alexia does do the honours to the brothers Gershwin I'm sure it will turn out fine!

Doors are at 7:00pm with the band on stage at 8:00pm.

Nel Begley Trio @ Hexham Community Centre - August 29

Nel Begley (vocals); Paul Edis (keyboards); Luke Fowler (double bass) + Ferg Kilsby (trumpet)

A third and final concert in the north east of England for the Nel Begley Trio. Hexham Community Centre hosted this Core Music promotion, thought to be the first ever jazz event at the Gilesgate resource centre. Following appearances at Newcastle Arts Centre and a sold out Gala Theatre, Durham, vocalist, composer and arranger Begley would, later in the evening, invite an up-and-coming brass player to join her trio.

Jairzinho, Pele, Carlos Alberto – Goal!!!! Nel Begley Trio @ The Gala Theatre Durham – August 29

© Malcolm Sinclair
Nel Begley (vocals); Paul Edis (piano); Luke Fowler (bass)

That 1970 headline was Brazilian and memorable: some of today’s lunchtime musical fare was Brazilian and all of it was memorable! Pleb that I am, I misheard the title Joãozinho Boa Pinta and immediately thought of football! Anyway, the Brazilian clearly appealed to Lance at the Black Swan last night and it went down well at The Gala too.

Album review: Shear Brass - Extraordinary Journey (Ireton Records)

(Collective): Jason McDermid (trumpet, arranger); Pete Long (clarinet, alto/tenor sax); Alistair White (trombone); James Pearson (piano); Anthony Kerr (vibes, perc.); Alec Dankworth (bass); Carl Gorham (drums); Satin Singh (perc.); Sarah Moule, Romy Sipek (vocals)

I reviewed the first album by Shear Brass back in August 2023 (HERE) and, as a great admirer of the late Sir George Shearing's identifiable sound, I couldn't wait for this second volume.

I only heard Sir George live once and that was back in the 1980s at the Royal Festival Hall where he accompanied Mel Tormé in concert - the support act was Carmen McRae - what a concert that was!

On that occasion it was only piano, bass and vocals although Tormé did occasionally put in a shift on the kit. Here we have the whole nine yards plus two and the arrangements by McDermid bring an updated touch to the material without losing the feel of the originals.

Nel Begley Trio @ The Black Swan, Newcastle - August 28

© Mike Tilley
Nel Begley (vocals); Paul Edis (piano); Luke Fowler (bass)

It was back in April when I reviewed an album by Nel Begley and I was impressed* to the extent that when I heard that she was appearing in and around the north east, albeit with a somewhat truncated ensemble, I made sure I was there.

And I wasn't disappointed, in fact the album and the concert offered an interesting contrast with neither having the edge on either. By and large it was promotional although not all of the material was from the album and maybe the couple that were missing - The Gentle Rain and Spice - didn't lend themselves to being pared down.

Julien Cattiaux 'Acoustic Trio' @ 38 Riv Jazz Club, Paris - August 27

Daniel John Martin (violon, vocals); Gilles Rea (guitare); Julien Cattiaux (contrebasse) + Marius Bojan (guitare)

A first visit to 38 Riv Jazz Club. The '38' refers to the door number on Rue Rivoli. A classic cellar venue, not unlike Durham's Holy GrAle or Smalls, NYC, we were in Paris to hear double bassist Julien Cattiaux's 'Acoustic Trio'.

Descending a staircase into a stone-built cellar, we were greeted by none other than Daniel John Martin! No stranger to the north east of England (numerous gigs with Mick Shoulder's Swing Manouche), this was DJM on home turf.

The Scott Hamilton Quartet @ the Soho Pizza Express, London - August 25

© Russell
Scott Hamilton (tenor sax); John  Pearce (piano); Dave Green (double bass); Steve Brown (drums)

Scott Hamilton returned to the Pizza Express for a run of dates working with his tried and trusted London rhythm section comprising John Pearce, Dave Green and Steve Brown.

One house, two sets of old school tenor playing, we were in for a treat. Jimmy McHugh's I Just Found Out about Love, Harold Arlen's The More I See You, Hamilton stretched out, respectful of the melody, masterful in his invention.

All aboard at home and abroad

This flyer for the Jazz Train to the Pittsburgh Jazz Festival, hosted by pianist Orrin Evans assisted by Singers Unlimited and co-host Janis Siegel (stopping off at New York, Newark and Philadelphia), reminded me that just a few years back the north east had its own version.

The Jazz and Real Ale Train, hosted by Brian Bennett and the Vieux Carré Jazzmen plus guests, ran from Newcastle Central Station to Carlisle (stopping at stations along the way such as Wylam, Stocksfield, Corbridge, Hexham, Bardon Mill and others).

The real ale was almost as popular as the jazz and, judging by the photo everyone was having a good time and no damage, to the best of my knowledge, was done to the trains. Perhaps its time for a revival. Lance

Album review: Caelan Cardello- Chapter One (Jazz Bird Records)

Caelan Cardello (piano); Jonathon Muir-Cotton (bass); Domo Branch (drums) + Chris Lewis (tenor sax tks 4,6,9)

Another group of unfamiliar names to me and, I suspect, to most fans this side of of the Atlantic. Still, that's one of the beauties of music - the joy of discovery.

They open up with Gone Fishin' one of eight originals by Cardello and not to be confused with the Louis Armstrong/Bing Crosby hit from back in the early 1950s.The other three composers are Cedar Walton, Harold Mabern and Cole Porter.

It was Porter who provided All of You. Taken at a nice easy swing it allows Cardello and Muir-Cotton to fly as gracefully as a pair of swallows on the wing.

Lancaster Jazz Festival

The wide array of bands appearing include: Ubunye; Led Bib; Mark Kavuna Quartet; Nonunonu and Tyneside favourites Archipelago. To learn more about these and other artists appearing or to book tickets go HERE.

Neil Yates Quintet @ Llandudno Jazz Club - August 25

Neil Yates (trumpet); Steve Berry (double bass); Johnny Hunter (drums); Sam Dunn (guitar); Andor Jenson (tenor/curved soprano sax)

For the last few years Jazz on a Monday has been a weekly fixture at the Penrhyn Arms. An award winning real ale and real cider pub, Neil Yates curates the jazz evenings presenting, on alternate Mondays, modern or trad jazz. Both sessions feature top class musicians. My penchant is more for the modern jazz but the trad jazz is very popular with those who prefer that genre.

Neil Yates is one of the UK’s top trumpet players and composers attracting many of the heavyweights of the UK jazz scene and beyond to Llandudno Jazz Club including Soweto Kinch, David Lyttle and Tori Freestone to name a few. On a regular basis top jazz musicians from London, Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham and elsewhere travel from near and far to play here. This concert was no exception with Johnny Hunter from Manchester, Andor Jenson from Liverpool, Steve Berry from Blackburn and Sam Dunn from Dover. It is a privilege to attend these concerts and to enjoy musicians of this calibre.

Adrian Ingram - A Life In Music

Jazz guitarist and author, Adrian Ingram reflects on his life in music. He provides a fascinating insight into what it was like to grow up in the British music scene in the sixties and seventies.

Adrian goes into detail with regard to his musical influences and describes the long journey that took him to America to play with the likes of Jimmy Bruno and John Pisano, among many others.

He also speaks about the many publications he has written, including his book on Wes Montgomery. Of interest to guitar nerds and jazz fans alike! Jeremy Platt

Hot Club of Soho @ The Spice of Life, Cambridge Circus - August 25

© Patti
Mike Piggott (violin, vocals); Jeff Green (guitar); Nils Solberg (guitar, vocals); Peter Morgan (bass, vocals)

In the absence of string bass player Richard Pite - and organiser of the Spice of Life's weekly Monday lunchtime sessions - the Hot Club of Soho drafted in long time friend, bassist Peter Morgan.

This afternoon's concert performance opened to a two thirds full house. For whatever reason, several latecomers arrived towards the interval, making it a full house.

The stragglers missed several standards, including 'S WonderfulSwing 39 and Out of Nowhere. Across the course of two sets, Mike Piggott did the talking, taking two or three vocals into the bargain, but our violinist would by no means dominate the show. How could he when, to his left, sat two fine Djangologists, Messrs Jeff Green and Nils Solberg? Add Peter Morgan to the mix and we had a cookin' rhythm section.

Stockport Jazz at the Moor Club

The Chris Coull Quartet @ Queen's Hall, Hexham - August 24

Chris Coull (trumpet, flugelhorn); Joe Steels (guitar); Andy Champion (double bass); John Bradford (drums)

The last day of Chris Coull's run of north of England dates found the Brighton based trumpeter in Hexham this afternoon, followed by a final gig in the evening at Newcastle Jazz Co-op's HQ on Railway Street (see LL's review).

A casual, genial demeanour, Mr C knows how to present a gig, that's for sure. Engaging his audience, frequently name-checking his 'up north' bandmates, all basic stuff really. Ten out of ten.

Swing Manouche @ Blaydon Jazz Club - August 18

Martin Winning (clarinet); Mick Shoulder (guitar); Dave Smith (rhythm guitar); Paul Grainger (double bass)

© Roly Veitch
Blaydon Jazz Club is on something of a roll. In recent times audience numbers have stabilised, a sure sign that, post Covid, folk are getting along to the Black Bull on a regular basis. Mine host, Dean, is supportive of the monthly jazz night here on Bridge Street, the ambience is such that musicians and audience alike are happy to make the pilgrimage.

This evening, Swing Manouche were making a return visit. Formed by guitarist Mick Shoulder, it took a while for the Django-inspired quartet to hit on a settled line-up. Messrs Mick Shoulder, Dave Smith (rhythm guitar), Paul Grainger (string bass) and clarinettist Martin Winning would appear to be that settled line-up.

Sunday night @ the Globe: Chris Coull Quartet - August 24

Chris Coull (trumpet, flugel); Joe Steels (guitar); Andy Champion (bass); John Bradford (drums)

Fiery bebop trumpet and a rhythm section for all seasons - who could ask for anything more? Not me, that's for sure!

Opening with an Eddie 'Lockjaw' Davis number - For Gigi - the bebop groove was in. This wasn't the Globe, we were in Minton's or Birdland or some other jazz joint in NYC.

Things cooled (Coulled?) with Lee Morgan's Ceora. Played on flugel over a bossa rhythm the mellow tone of the flugel gelling nicely with Joe Steel's chords, Andy's bass line, and John's relatively restrained brush/stickwork.

The first big hitter of the night was There is no Greater Love which got the audience going. There are few greater tunes and, taken at a medium to up tempo it swung like nobody's business with Joe and Andy taking impressive solos and John dropping bombs when bombs needed to be dropped.

Album review: Paul Harrison - Encontros (Harriphonic)

Paul Harrison (piano, melodica, synth.); Mario Caribé (bass, cavaquinho); Stuart Brown (drums, perc.) + Edmundo Carneiro (perc. 3-7,9,10); Laura Macdonald (alto sax 2,5,8); Rachel Lightbody (vocals 4,7,9); Fraser Fifield (low D whistle 7); Su-A Lee (cello 5,10)

A tribute to Egberto Gismonti, the renowned Brazilian composer who provided the material for ten of the eleven tracks.

The music is built upon the core trio of Harrison, Caribé and Brown with extra dimensions and colour supplied on various tracks by alto saxist Laura  Macdonald (Palhaço, Meninas, O Sonho); vocalist Rachel Lightbody (Lôro, Bianca, Illuminado); Cellist Su-A Lee (Meninas, Sete Aneis) and Fraser Fifield who blows a low D whistle on Bianca. Edmundo Carneiro not only provides authentic Latin percussion on seven of the tracks but also combines with Harrison to compose Transition.

Album review: Lauren Henderson - Sonidos (Brontosaurus Records)

Lauren Henderson (vocals); Joel Ross (vibes); Sullivan Fortner (piano); Dezron Douglas (bass except 3, 4, 12-14); Joe Dyson (drums) + Eric Wheeler (bass on 3, 4, 12-14); Luisito Quintero (perc. on 10)

There's an air of sadness hovering over this, the third album by Lauren Henderson to be reviewed on BSH. The other two: ALMA OSCURA and THE SONGBOOK SESSION were both reviewed by my dear friend Ann Alexander (Ann Alex) who died one year ago today (August 24, 2024).

Ann loved both albums and, re-reading her reviews a year later, I know she would have loved this one.

It's an appealing mix of standards and originals  sung in Spanish or English usually over a Latin rhythm by a singer with a soft, cajoling voice that finds a previously uncharted route to the listener's heart taking no prisoners on the way.

Album Review: Chicago Jazz Orchestra featuring Bobby Broom - More Amor (CJO Music)

Bobby Broom (guitar) + Chicago Jazz Orchestra (Artistic Director: Jeff Lindberg).

My apologies but this one's  been hanging around since early spring and somehow or other got shuffled down the pecking order. Perhaps I was overawed by the 'cast of thousands' in the Chicago Jazz Orchestra - my fingers can do just so much typing before they cease to function.

However, by cutting and pasting details from the album insert the problem was solved and when I did get around to actually listening to Billy Broom and the CJO it was well worth the wait - it's a cracker.

Of course fans of Wes who already have the originals are going to question the need for this one.

This Sunday night at the Globe (August 24) looks to be something special - particularly if you like bebop and beyond in the form of those Blue Note 'buglers' Clifford Brown, Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, Fats Navarro, Kenny Dorham and Blue Mitchell to name but some.

Chris Coull has assimilated the above stylists and, with the addition of his own individuality, created music that's alive and kicking today without giving the occasional reminder of the music's roots.

Art Tatum & Ben Webster - The Album (1956)

Some times I just want to sit back and relax. To listen with no pressure other than to chill out and enjoy one of the most, maybe the most, beautiful albums ever recorded.

Ben Webster, Art Tatum, Red Callender and Bill Douglass were perfection personified on that day - Sept. 11, 1956 - when Norman Granz assembled them in the Verve studios.

Ben's big fat sound, Tatum's Artistry and the discreet bass and drums make this unbeatable for sheer lyricism. Over the years the solos, the nuances have become embedded within.

Strictly Smokin' Big Band to celebrate Mel Tormé's centennial on Sept. 14 at the Exchange 1856 in North Shields

An exciting afternoon concert celebrating what would have been Mel Tormé's 100th birthday.

With vocals from Alice Grace and the original Billy May charts transcribed and updated by Stuart MaClean-Fowler North Shields looks to be the only game in town on Sunday September 14. details HERE. Lance

Album review: Jason Charos - Opening Statement (Holistic Music Works)

Jason Charos (trumpet, comp.); David Mason (alto sax not 2, 6); Melvin Butler (tenor sax on 1, 3, 4, 5); Kendric McCallister (tenor sax on 2, 6, 7, 8); Connor Rohrer (piano); Carlo De Rosa (bass); Ludwig Alfonso (drums not 5) + Brian Lynch (trumpet on 2); Dafnis Prieto (drums on 5)

Although this is Charos' debut album his, and some of the band's names looked familiar and I furrowed my brow. Then it clicked! Charos, Mason, McCallister and Rohrer were part of Samara Joy's backing band on her recent Prom concert, broadcast live from the Royal Albert Hall last month.

I was impressed by the support they gave Samara and equally so by their solos.

Needless to say, even before I knew all this, I was reeling from the get-go. It isn't every day I get an album to review that ticks all the boxes but Opening Statement does that and maybe adds a couple of boxes more - I ticked those as well.

Late Night Chicago Radio w. Denny Farrell (Aug. 21 - Aug 27)

Album review: Paul Cornish - You're Exaggerating! (Blue Note)

Paul Cornish (piano, comp.); Joshua Crumbly (bass); Jonathan Pinson (drums) + Jeff Parker (guitar tk 7)

Blue Note have from their pre-war beginnings, via the excitement of the 1950s to the present day, always been a label that called the shots. Pushing their artists forward as well as signing young musicians who were already thinking ahead and creating tomorrow's music today.

Paul Cornish is one such explorative musician not afraid to venture into the unknown. Although Cornish's compositions are deep and sensitive, they're also melodic and lyrical, a hint that Bill Evans was part of his learning curve before finding his own voice which he mostly has done on this album.

Album review: Nick Finzer - The Jazz Orchestra Volume 1 (On the Outside)

Nick Finzer (MD, arr. trombone); Michael Thomas, Jordan Pettay (alto sax); Lucas Pino, Evan Harris (tenor sax); Tony Lustig (baritone Sax); Augie Haas, Anthony Hervey, Nadje Noordhuis, Chloe Rowlands (trumpets); Rob Edwards, James Burton III, Sara Jacovino, Altin Sencalar (trombones); Alex Wintz (guitar); Glenn Zaleski (piano); Dave Baron (bass); Jimmy Macbride (drums)

An interesting, and at times, exciting big band led by one of New York's top trombonists and creative arrangers - Nick Finzer. The arrangements are thoughtful and contemporary leaning more towards Gil Evans or George Russell rather than Clarke/Boland or Jones/Lewis.

Needless to say Finzer's trombone solos are in abundance and any sliders listening will be impressed, not just by his technical ability which, by the way is awesome, but by the beauty of his sound. A cool, dry, purity that still maintains a jazz feel. J.J. Johnson had it and so does Finzer. His affinity to Johnson has been well documented musically on a quartet album entitled Legacy and here, most noticeably on Johnson's Lament.

R.I.P. Enid Stafford

Just heard, somewhat belatedly, of the passing of Enid Stafford. Enid worked in the record dept. of  J.G. Windows Ltd. for many years. Opera singer, pianist and a full of fun personality I was forever indebted to her for giving me the inside information that there was going to be a job going in JGW's instrument Dept. which I duly got. Prior to Windows we played together in a band with Enid on piano, myself on sax and her husband Tom on vocals.

In the above photo of Hebburn Amateur Operatic Society Enid is at the far left of the front row.

J.G. Windows' many record buying customers from over the years will remember Enid fondly for her customer friendly presence and her knowledge of the most obscure popular records.

Enid's funeral will take place at South Tyneside Crem on Monday Sept. 1 at 12:30 then afterwards at the Lakeside Inn.

Sadly missed. Lance

Sunday night @ the Globe: The Milne Glendinning Band - August 17

© Sheila Herrick
Debra Milne (vocals, shakers); Steve Glendinning (guitar, backing vocals); Mike Clarke (bass guitar, backing vocals)

In the wider world of jazz Debra Milne is the mover and shaker when it comes to booking bands from near and afar to gig at the Globe. The multi-tasking Debra also organises the Jazz Co-op's AGM sometimes live, sometimes on-line, serves behind the bar and has a day job as a pathologist. On top of all that she sings and co-leads the Milne Glendinning Band. The jazz world needs people like Debra.

Her co-leader, Steve Glendinning, apart from being a fine guitarist also runs the Globe's educational jazz workshop programme.

Mike Clarke, although he doesn't feature in the billing provides solid support on bass guitar.

Stan Brunt Quartet @ MAP Studio Cafe, Kentish Town - August 10

© Richard Morris
Stan Brunt (guitar); Sam Norris (alto sax); Guy Dempsey (double bass); Jonah Evans (drums)

The MAP Studio Cafe* has been an established jazz venue for about 20 years. More recently regular Sunday evening jazz gigs have been curated by Sam Norris: sax player, composer, writer and teacher. I have been here 4 times this year whilst visiting London from North Wales and this venue has become my go to on Sunday evenings. It is a quirky, intimate venue. Ground floor bar, kitchen and stacked with vinyl and ceramics. It houses a recording studio and upstairs is the performance space with art and a variety of seating to include a church pew.

Album review: Colin Hancock's Jazz Hounds feat. Catherine Russell - Cat & the Hounds (Turtle Bay Records)

Catherine Russell (vocals); Colin Hancock (cornet, C-melody sax, arr.); Dion Tucker (trombone); Evan Christopher (clarinet); Jerron Paxton (banjo, guitar, vocals, harmonica); Jon Thomas (piano); Kerry Lewis (tuba); Ahmad Johnson (drums) - Vince Giordano (bass sax on tks 4, 7)

What a delightful album! What a great band! And what a super singer! Not exactly trad, not quite mainstream more what my friends from the north side would call Classic Jazz and it's certainly music for a themed party.

The repertoire is a reminder of how, back in the mid-twenties/early thirties, black popular music was a heady mixture of jazz, blues and theatre and the more risqué the lyric the more the audience loved it - they'd have loved this record!

Frank Griffith @ the Morley Green Club, Wilmslow - August 12

Frank Griffith (tenor sax, clarinet); Jack Tinker, Cliff Ray (trumpet, flugel); John Padfield  (alto sax); Rick Halliwell (baritone sax); Sam Crooks (trombone); Tom Sykes (keys); Dave Luckhurst (bass); Andy Bold (drums)

I was surprised that there were not more jazz fans in attendance to hear this  fine nine-piece group led by reedsman and arranger Frank Griffith.  Born in Eugene, Oregon USA, and now residing in the Liverpool area, Frank has spent time in New York City although  I first heard him live when he played the late lamented Railway at Stockport with his quartet - a venue he played on many occasions.
