This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. All aboard at home and abroad

This flyer for the Jazz Train to the Pittsburgh Jazz Festival, hosted by pianist Orrin Evans assisted by Singers Unlimited and co-host Janis Siegel (stopping off at New York, Newark and Philadelphia), reminded me that just a few years back the north east had its own version.

The Jazz and Real Ale Train, hosted by Brian Bennett and the Vieux Carré Jazzmen plus guests, ran from Newcastle Central Station to Carlisle (stopping at stations along the way such as Wylam, Stocksfield, Corbridge, Hexham, Bardon Mill and others). 

The real ale was almost as popular as the jazz and, judging by the photo everyone was having a good time and no damage, to the best of my knowledge, was done to the trains. Perhaps its time for a revival. Lance
