The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Art Tatum & Ben Webster - The Album (1956)


Some times I just want to sit back and relax. To listen with no pressure other than to chill out and enjoy one of the most, maybe the most, beautiful albums ever recorded.

Ben Webster, Art Tatum, Red Callender and Bill Douglass were perfection personified on that day - Sept. 11, 1956 - when Norman Granz assembled them in the Verve studios.

Ben's big fat sound, Tatum's Artistry and the discreet bass and drums make this unbeatable for sheer lyricism. Over the years the solos, the nuances have become embedded within. 

This is from the original American pressing and has an extra track (All the Things You Are) that was missing from the UK Columbia release. There's also some solo piano added on - some of the same tunes sans Ben! Lance

Ah, this is a wonderful album - we had the original vinyl ..... amazing, and as you say, so lyrical. Ben Webster had such a recognisable sound on the tenor - quite erotic in its lush, warm tone on those ballads.
