This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Smokin' Brew Moore..

Came across this photo of the legendary tenor saxist Brew Moore in Jazz 1958, Metronome magazine's annual yearbook.

It brings to mind the scene back in those nicotine fuelled days when sax players would find a home for their Chesterfield or Lucky Strike within the mechanism of their instrument and, more often than not, it wasn't tobacco inside the cigarette their Selmer Mark VI was holding!

Brew Moore, who famously said, "Anybody who doesn't play like Lester is wrong" stopped smoking forever after he fell downstairs whilst drunk and broke his neck - in Copenhagen on August 19, 1973.

Still he was a great tenor player, probably long forgotten by the future generations who began with Coltrane and Rollins. Even the Guinness Who's Who of Jazz doesn't give Moore an individual entry. Maybe Brew preferred a a different brew ... Lance
