This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Ken Marley Quartet plays the Benny Carter Songbook @ the Moor Club, Heaton Moor, Stockport - Jan. 12

Ken Marley likes the tunes of legendary saxophonist and arranger Benny Carter and tonight he took centre stage and played two very interesting sets, six tunes each set all composed by Carter. For those amongst you who never got to hear Benny Carter during his many tours of the UK and Europe he was an impressive musician with a great sound on alto sax, his main horn, but he could also play trumpet which he did on occasion.

Liam Byrne had a major role in the proceedings and this was the first time I had seen his huge bass sax in action as I was away when he brought it with him on his last visit to the Moor Club on  Sept. 22. He gets a  great sound. I think the last time I heard a bass sax was Roscoe Mitchell playing one with the Art Ensemble of Chicago.  


Liam played mostly tenor sax but featured the bass sax on three tunes: We Were In Love, Blue Star and Rock Bottom.


I thought the overall sound was first rate tonight and Dave Walsh did some nice brushwork and got into some nifty exchanges with Ken Marley’s bass which came off well. Paul Hartley used his Spanish guitar to good effect on Only Trust your Heart - a tune that seems to have been heard at quite a few gigs this past year. Tonight it was given a medium bossa nova treatment.    


Next Sunday night's jazz is on Jan. 19 with Julian Gregory and Mathew Crompton. Mike Farmer
