Bebop Spoken There

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Sunday night @ the Globe: Castillo Nuevo Trio - August 11

© Sheila Herrick
Jason Holcomb (trombone); Alix Shepherd (keys); David Olatunji (perc.)

For once the weather played ball. We were off on a musical journey to Cuba and all points south. The climate is hot in Havana and on Railway Street it was certainly warm for the time of year which added to the ambiance of the gig.

It was fun, it was exciting and it was danceable although nobody did. Instead the audience listened, applauded and, after memorising the word, they shouted 'Tequila!' when the trio encored with the tune of the same name.

A host of exotic rhythms on a selection of mainly well-known Latinesque pieces although there were a couple of titles that escaped me.

All three musicians impressed. Olatunji producing amazing sounds and rhythms from a pair of congas, a snare drum, one stick and a pair of hands. Shepherd putting the bassline in with his left hand whilst displaying his prodigious technique with the right. Holcomb too has technique to spare, at times I thought there was smoke coming from the bell. I've read of people starting a fire by rubbing two pieces of wood together but I've never witnessed it. However, had the trombone been made of wood I would have done last night.

The precision and the spot on timing of the arrangements told us that this was a polished, tried and tested performance - why change a winning team?

After what had been a difficult week, those who showed their support for the venue were justly rewarded. Lance
