Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Preview: Northumberland Jazz Festival (May 25 & 26)

This bank holiday weekend sees the return/rebranding of the Hexham Jazz Festival. Now known as the Northumberland Jazz Festival, the focus will be upon Queen's Hall on Beaumont Street. Two major concert presentations in the Main Hall, a Sunday afternoon in Hexham Library and a double bill in the park across the road and we've got ourselves a jazz festival!

The opening event on Saturday evening features the Paul Edis Trio with special guests Alan Barnes (reeds) and Bruce Adams (trumpet). It's an early evening start (6:30pm) with a support set by Jambone. Now under the direction of Jason Holcomb, it'll be interesting to see if the region's youth jazz ensemble has recruited new members. Pianist Paul Edis' superb trio features bassist Ken Marley and drummer Russ Morgan

The Sele, that's the park opposite Queen's Hall, hosts the market town's Tyne Valley Big Band (12:30pm, Sunday) followed by the fabulous vocalist Alice Grace working the ace trio of Joe Steels (guitar and Festival Programmer), Paul Susans (bass) and drummer John Hirst. At three o'clock make your way to Hexham Library (within Queen's Hall) to enjoy a performance by vocalist Bryony Jarman-Pinto working in the company of guitarist Tom Leah and drummer Jen Walinetski

The Northumberland Jazz Festival's closing concert presents the acclaimed Clark Tracey Quintet. At six o'clock in Queen's Hall, award-winning bandleader/drummer Clark Tracey leads a star-studded band comprising Konrad Wiszniewski, tenor sax, Colin Steele, trumpet, Bruce Boardman, piano and Tom Marsh, bass. There is a range of ticket prices offering individual concert tickets through to a discounted weekend package. To book visit: www.queenshall.co.uk or call 01434 652477. Russell
