Bebop Spoken There

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Bill Holman (May 21, 1927 - May 6, 2024)

Sad to learn of the death of saxophonist, arranger and composer Bill Holman who died on May 6 in Los Angeles at the age of 96.

Although he was probably best known for his many arrangements for the Stan Kenton Orchestra he also contributed charts to the Buddy Rich Band, including the Beatles' Norwegian Wood which became a staple part of the Rich band's repertoire.

As well as playing and arranging for big bands Holman was an integral part of the west coast jazz scene appearing on many albums with the various ex-Kentonites who had settled in LA for the lucrative work in the film and TV studios.

One of my favourites is an album he co-led with fellow tenor saxist Richie Kamuka. However, beautiful as Kamuka's playing is it's Holman's rare baritone solos (and his arrangements) that add that extra bit of spice.

For more examples of Bill Holman's work check out Marc Myer's JAZZWAX* site.

Farewell to an all-time great - R.I.P. Lance

About ten years ago I met Bill Holman at a big band festival in Los Angeles. I found myself sitting next to him at a concert and we struck up a conversation. He seemed like a really nice bloke, very popular, so much so, I had to change my seat to allow others (many of them his fellow musicians) to sit down to talk to him. He'll be much missed.
