This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Paul Edis @ the Lit & Phil - Dec. 15

Solo piano recitals can be daunting and, invariably, I find myself longing for the comforting presence of bass and drums to fill out and offer contrast to the main man.

Not so this afternoon at the Lit and Phil's popular monthly sessions although the ponderous theme of the opening Dig Deep had my mind wandering in that direction.

Fortunately, those thoughts were soon dispelled with Nobody Else But me that hit a nice groove and those imaginary bass and drums were on the bus home (eventually!)

Start Over had a funky 3/4 feel to it and the bluesy Muddle Through saw Paul doing anything but 'muddling through'. This went into another original January Mood. How evocative this was of those post Christmas blues. Those days when the bills replace the Christmas cards, when Turkey à la King is replaced by Chicken à la Microwave and you can stop pretending you love your relative's obnoxious kids. Paul's doomy rendition captured it all.

Murmuration related to bird formations without quoting  Ornithology and Will o' the Wisp was as ethereal as the title suggests.

Body and Soul was exquisite and, spiced up with a few Tatumesque runs, totally hit the spot.

Bring me Sunshine (think Morecambe and Wise) is a number that Paul often pulls out of the bag and with the notes in the right order!

The one hour session flew by too quickly finishing up up with the appropriately titled The End.

A great set that rubber-stamped Paul Edis' credentials and went a long way to suggest that he may yet turn out to be the area's greatest ever jazz export! Lance
