The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. John Colianni (7/1/62 - 28/11/2023)

Peter Bevan has sent me the sad news that American pianist John Colianni passed away on Nov. 28.

I wasn't familiar with the name until Peter pointed out that he was the pianist in the Lionel Hampton Band (pictured at the left of the picture) who played Newcastle City Hall on May 14, 1983.

In truth, he didn't register with me. The concert was a typical Hamp circus with the leader hogging the show on piano, vibes and drums. The band paraded around the hall and scant attention was paid by the audience to the rhythm section on stage!

However, twenty years later Peter heard him in trio format and was impressed, as can be seen by his review of the gig at Darlington Arts Centre (see graphic). 

Sadly missed, not least because I didn't get to hear him in a trio setting. R.I .P.  Lance
