This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Merlin Roxby @ Prohibition Bar, Newcastle - Nov.30

The last day of November, a cold, dark evening, winter on its way, let's go to a gig. Prohibition Bar on Pink Lane is the kind of place where they know what your tipple is, the bartender enquiring: The usual? It was tempting to reply: Set 'em up Joe.  As Merlin Roxby knocked out some ragtime tunes, Prohibition Bar proprietor Mitch decked the place will baubles and such like. Yes, it's almost that time of year.  

Your correspondent is happy to report Merlin didn't succumb to playing 'festive' numbers. Left Bank Two, You Got a Friend in Me, Merlin's usual numbers were somehow reassuring. Maple Leaf Rag (excellent), Windy World (it'll mean something to the computer gamer), Benny the Bouncer (excellent), Merlin didn't Mess Around (he did, play it, that is), and we were able to Dream a Little Dream of Me. 

Merlin Roxby's next engagement at Prohibition Bar, ever closer to the season, is Thursday 14 December. Russell
