Bebop Spoken There

Ron Carter quoting Sonny Rollins: ''What we call jazz - that's keeping the world in equilibrium. I don't care what kind of music you like out here today. It all comes from jazz.'' (DownBeat August, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Album review: Ella Wishes You a Swinging Christmas

Luddite that I am, I don't like these pesky download, streaming things, However, I do make the occasional exception particularly when it's Ella and she's spreading seasonal tidings of peace and joy, and goodwill, although, I do believe this one's also out on vinyl/CD 63 years after it first came out.

The arrangements by Frank de Vol are as good as, if not better than, any other arrangers clearing the seasonal snow on the same side of the street. A few unnamed soloists (trumpet, vibes, tenor) also sneak in a chorus or two here and there. If Oliver Twist had been on the gig he'd have begged for 'one more time'!

Still you can't fault Ella, she was at her peak and it did what it said on the tin although the best before date (December 25) should be observed.

However, the thought that crosses my mind is that who buys Christmas albums or, for that matter, Christmas jumpers, bearing in mind that they have the shelf life of a butterfly?

If you want some Christmas jazz that will not upset your great aunt before the mulled wine takes over then this one's for you. Lance

Jingle Bells, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas; What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?; Sleigh Ride; The Christmas Song; Good Morning Blues; Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!; Winter Wonderland; Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer; Frosty the Snowman; White Christmas

And if you want to hear some of the numbers played live there is every chance A Jazzy Christmas (Paul Edis' Xmas show at a north east venue near you) and the Strictly Smokin' Big Band's two nights at Gosforth Civic Theatre will have them in their respective set lists. Oh, jingle bells, jingle bells...
