Bebop Spoken There

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Tonight @ the Globe ...

(© Roly Veitch)
Tonight promises to be one of THE gigs of the year at the Globe - the Lewis Watson Quartet.

I've been a fan of Lewis, or Lew as he was back then, when he emerged from music college as a member of SNECK who played a regular Tuesday night gig at the Corner House which, back then, was the centre of the north east jazz universe.

Around about this time in the early 1980s he beat off the competition in a jazz contest held at the City Vaults in Newcastle's Bigg Market that saw him pick up a hundred well deserved smackers (and I don't mean kisses although, being in the Bigg Market, if he'd hung around...) ahead of a mega strong field.

From thereon he became an almost  annual fixture at the various Newcastle Jazz Festivals, his prowess growing and his absorption of more contemporary influences moving him into the forefront of the local scene although, had he been so inclined, the world could have been his oyster.

He dropped out of sight for a while but has recently emerged with tonight's line-up at the Globe (Lewis Watson, Mark Williams, Andy Champion, John Bradford) it's a 'not to be missed' gig but, although I can't make it, don't blame it on my 'long gone youth' blame it on Go-North East/Unite (delete as you see fit.)
