This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. R.I.P. Steve Voce (1933-2023)

Jazz journalist and writer Steve Voce passed away on Nov. 23 at the age of 89.

Best known for his monthly column in the print version of Jazz Journal his writing provided a breath of fresh air in comparision to many of his contemporaries. He didn't suffer fools gladly, nor any over-pretentiousness in the music he loved.

Like himself, his sense of humour will be sadly missed even by those such as myself only knew him from the written word.

I only heard of Steve's death today. He was an extremely generous man, and back in the 1970s I corresponded with him about the late trombonist, Bill Harris, who he greatly admired. He was kind enough to send me cassettes of much of his recorded work, including his encounter with Ben Webster, which was long deleted at the time. I never met him, l only know of him through his writings for Jazz Journal. He was a friendly correspondent whose enthusiasm shone through in all he wrote, and he wore his considerable knowledge very lightly. At the time of our correspondence he was being attacked for his honest, but at the time (probably even more so today) views on an LP which had been issued about "Gay Jazz" That was the great thing about Steve - he wrote what he thought, not what others told him to think.
