Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Album review: Stacey Kent - Summer me, Winter me

It seems to have been a while (2017) since we last reviewed an album by Stacey Kent - I Know I Dream - subtitled The Orchestral Sessions which had her Hexham born husband, Jim Tomlinson, leading a 58 piece orchestra.

The accompaniment is somewhat trimmed down on this new album although it does have a string quartet that saws away effectively on If You go Away and Tomlinson does attempt to redress the balance by playing seven different instruments over the course of the eleven tracks.

He's proficient on all of them but it's his cool sounding tenor sax that will get him the Freedom of Hexham

Stacey is her inimitable self adding an emotive content to the material both in English and in French. Soft and sensuous at times, strident at others she captures the composer's intent perfectly.

A note about the songs. They include compositions by Legrand, the Bergmans, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Jobim, Loewe and Lerner as well as couple from Tomlinson himself.

It all came about (the album) when, after a concert, fans would ask them which song they'd played and which album was it on? Needless to say, not every song that she sung live got recorded. In the case of If You go Away, she sings it, first in English, then on the final track, in French as Ne me quitte pas. Fans of Stacey Kent will want this one.

It's available on CD and digital from a week tomorrow (Nov. 10) on Naïve Records. Lance
