9.5mm sound film - T.9692 "JIVIN' AND JAMMIN' " Dinah Kaye, Maurice Arnold Sextet.

A short film (16 minutes) featuring the Maurice Arnold Sextet with vocals by Dinah Kaye from circa 1948. They're neither boppers nor revivalists but probably dance band musicians 'letting their hair down'. I use the word probably as there's no indication as to who they are and I didn't recognise any of them. I even scoured the pages of Melody Maker but all to no avail. Can anyone help?

Presumably Arnold is the pianist as he does have a solo feature on Three Blind Mice. Trumpet, clarinet and trombone know what they're doing and the whole has the feel of a Soho/Mayfair night club as seen and briefly heard in an old black and white British movie of the time.

It's pleasant enough with the high spots being the two numbers by Dinah Kaye: Honeysuckle Rose and These Foolish Things. Dinah who died in 2011 was one of the better British vocalists of the post war years and recorded and toured with a lot of bands both here and in the States. MORE.

The film can also be seen tomorrow (Mon. Sept. 4 @ 7:00pm) on the Talking Pictures TV where hopefully the film will be sharper and the sound less muddy. Lance

Loch Lomond; Honeysuckle Rose; Three Blind Mice; These Foolish Things; I Found a New Baby.
