Bebop Spoken There

Steve Coleman: ''If you don't keep learning, your mind slows down. Use it or lose it''. (DownBeat, January 2025).

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Richie Emmerson/Kevin Eland Quintet @ Dorman's Jazz Club, Middlesbrough - May 4

Richie Emmerson (tenor sax); Kevin Eland (trumpet/flugel); Dave Archbold (keys); Ron Smith (bass); Mark Hawkins (drums).

This month's guest band, comprising of some of the best local jazz musicians, gave us their own interpretations of jazz standards pleasing the audience and making this a highly successful night.

Starting with a driving version of Nat Adderley's Work Song with lively trumpet, sax and piano solos in turn backed up with excellent rhythm from Ron on bass and Mark on drums clearly showing how tight an ensemble they were, this then set the pattern for the night.

A more relaxed Autumn Leaves followed with nice flugelhorn work from Kevin.
Mark and Ron set up the rhythm for Blue Bossa (playing it as a fast samba) giving ample opportunity for Richie on tenor and Kevin on flugel to shine before fine solo work from Dave on keyboard and Mark on drums.

After playing the well known standard I'll Remember April, Richie stood down to allow Kevin to be featured with a beautiful and flawless Stardust.

The first set was brought to a close with a fast and flowing Love For Sale with a nice piano intro and great solos all round.

Herbie Hancock's Cantaloupe Island was  a fitting start to the second set followed by Horace Silver's Song For My Father with nice bass intro from Ron.

The Miles Davis number Freddie Freeloader included another fine solo from Ron on bass and of course great trumpet work from Kevin. The well known standard On Green Dolphin St showed how fluently they all played together.

Kevin then stood down allowing Richie to demonstrate his mastery of the tenor sax with a beautiful version of Erroll Garner's Misty.

A great driving rendition of Duke Ellington's Caravan brought the night to a close.

Another successful guest band night enjoyed by both audience and band alike.

Thanks go to the staff of Dorman's Club for their help and support in running the jazz club.Ron Hampton
