This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Preview: The Windy City Weatherbirds - The Vault, Hexham (May 19)

Surfing the internet your correspondent chanced upon the Windy City Weatherbirds. YouTube clips of the young, six piece London based band playing '30s Chicago jazz, inspired by the likes of Louis Armstrong, Bobby Hackett, Muggsy Spanier and Jack Teagarden impressed, big time. An email exchange with the Weatherbirds led to the lads accepting an invitation to undertake a three-date 'up north' mini tour. A lunchtime concert at Newcastle's Lit & Phil sold out in next to no time and an engagement at Darlington's New Orleans Jazz Club is set to attract a full house (the regulars know their stuff!). How can I get to hear the band? you ask...

The answer is to head to Hexham on Friday 19 May (7:30pm). The Vault on Hallgate, an intimate, brick-lined cellar is the ideal venue to catch the band in action. Tickets are £20, bookable online in advance: www.thevaulthexham.com (note, there will be no on the door admission on the night). The Windy City Weatherbirds travelling this far north will be a new experience for the lads, do turn out to show your support.
