This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Postmodern Jukebox 'Life in the Past Lane' @ Sage Gateshead - May 5

PMJ's latest tour, Life in the Past Lane, is like all of their shows a non-stop, roller coaster ride across the genres that leaves the audience breathless. This is entertainment with a capital E and a whole lot of  J-A-Z-Z in there too.

The band, the singers, the tapper are all absolutely first rate and could have put on an individual show of their own and no one would leave.

It was too dark to take notes and there was too much happening on stage to try. The two hour show just flew by.

Great bass player, but it wasn't all about the bass, although one number was. The trombonist was a fully paid up member of the showtime school and the tenor player/clarinettist had heap big jazz chops. Jack Amblin played drums and washboard, the pianist doubled on melodica and the guitarist also had some tasty moments. However, when it came to rhythm the hoofer certainly had it. He'd got more rhythm than George Gershwin.

Vocals included: Ashley Campbell: Bad Habits (Ed Sheeran) and Running Up That Hill (Kate Bush); Sweet Megg:  Midnight, the Stars and You; Sarah Potenza: The Power of Love (Huey Lewis).

The compere also had an amazing voice with a range that soared from the depths of the diaphragm to a falsetto far above that of the girls!

Earlier, the support act - singer/songwriter The Last Morrell - warmed us up with twenty minutes of guitar vocalising that had shades of Simon and Garfunkel, Elton John and Billy Joel before covering Th.e Police's Roxanne. A contrast to the main event. Lance
