This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) The Central Bar Quintet @ The Central Bar, Gateshead - May 7

Someday My Prince Will Come ticked several boxes. The Central Bar Quintet's latest 'play-through' album featured Pete Tanton as Miles Davis and Sue Ferris as Hank Mobley and a sprinkling of John Coltrane. MC Tanton was at pains to point out that this 'first Sunday afternoon' Central Bar session (it's no longer a Monday evening gig) would be an homage to Miles Davis rather than a slavish copy of the 1961 Columbia album. 

Opening with the title track, from the down beat this was great stuff. The horns - Tanton and Ferris - played their parts to perfection. The rhythm section couldn't be bettered, as a quintet with minimal rehearsal time, this was one tight unit. Pfrancing encouraged bold, forthright statements from Tanton (more, please!), Ferris' tenor playing out of the top drawer and again on Teo (Miles Davis' long time producer Teo Macero) Ferris produced a knockout solo. 

Trumpeter Pete Tanton's bullet point commentary highlighted Davis' clear vision for the early sixties' recording; the blues form an integral part, the album cover design a key consideration. The quintet handled the delicacy of I Thought About You with aplomb and Blues No.2 took it home.

A long first set (one hour plus) necessarily resulted in a shorter second set. Five friends - that's the Central Bar Quintet - selecting numbers they wanted to play, including Autumn Leaves (a feature for pianist Alan Law), the audience more than happy to stay on to listen, it would appear Sunday afternoon on Half Moon Lane is the new Monday evening. The next session will be on Sunday 4th June, two o'clock start. Russell
