Bebop Spoken There

Trevor Mires: ''My mum is a Dean Martin fan: I'm not, so I would grab my skateboard and get out of the house whenever I heard "Everybody Loves Somebody, Sometime." ". (Jazzwise, April 2025).

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Pete Tanton’s Chet Set @ St James’ and St Basil’s Church - May 14

(© Pam)
Pete Tanton (trumpet, vocals);  Alan Law (piano);  Mick Shoulder (double bass);  John Bradford (drums).

The first Sunday offering of the Fenham church's summer jazz programme saw Pete Tanton, fresh from Strictly Smokin’s ongoing Harlem '58 tour, perform his Chet Baker set.  As usual for this set he was more than ably assisted by three musicians widely regarded as being at the top of their game.

Each time I see this set I hear something new. This is not a mere cover of tunes from the Chet Baker albums of '54 and '56. While it is true that Pete's voice lends itself beautifully to the tone and feel of Chet, he and his collaborators on this project move it seamlessly in various directions with their sheer musicality and inventiveness. No tribute band this!

A very recent reviewer of the Chet Set said that it was a “win win” gig; suiting both the jazz fan and the casual listener, and inside the beautiful church both were represented in numbers. While it was disappointing not to sit in the beautiful garden, the church space suited the haunting quality of tunes like My Funny Valentine and I Fall in Love Too Easily that may have been lost in the great outdoors.

Pete Tanton’s Chet Set will be at the Back Bull, Blaydon in June.

The next J's and B's  jazz offering is the Dean Stockdale Trio on June 18 @ 3pm. Sylvia

But Not For Me; Time After Time; My Funny Valentine; I Fall in Love Too Easily; The More I See You; It Could Happen to You; I Get Along Without You Very Well; I Remember You; Let’s Get Lost.
