Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Dean Stockdale livestreaming from Matt & Phred's - May 11

Dean Stockdale (piano); Tim Williams (guitar); Gavin Barras (double bass); Gaz Hughes (drums)

The livestream - or is it live stream? - came into its own during the long, endless days of lockdown. A handful of venues had been streaming gigs for decades but for most it was a new venture. As the world returns to something like normal - whatever 'normal' is - most musicians and venues are too busy entertaining real, live audiences to concern themselves with online punters. One venue continuing to present an online alternative is Matt and Phreds.

This evening the Dean Stockdale Quartet played three sets to an on-the-premises audience and an online (Facebook) crowd. Celebrating Oscar is pianist Dean Stockdale's loving homage to the great Oscar Peterson. Several concerts performances have received wide spread acclaim and it is a measure of Peterson's and Stockdale's appeal that the project is touring throughout 2023.

Opening with Blues Etude, the online presentation ticked all the boxes - several camera angles, good audio, in essence, the basic requirements. Stockdale likes to take Have You Met Miss Jones? at a slower tempo than usual, and most effective it is too! Here at Matt and Phred's his piano playing was absolutely top notch. Bassist Gavin Barras' sound is uncannily like that of NHØP! Listen again on catch up to Noreen's Nocturne.

Second set: Night Train with more great bass playing before the quartet slowed things down with OP's When Summer Comes. Stockdale's Celebrating Oscar set list comprised many much-loved tunes. A third set followed, however, due to a computer glitch (nothing to do with the Manchester end of the livestream) it wasn't until the closing number that normal service was resumed. At five minutes to midnight Dean Stockdale and co signed off with How Deep is the Ocean?   Russell
