Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Album review: Markus Rutz - Storybook

Markus Rutz (trumpet); Sharel Cassity (sax); Adrian Ruiz (piano); Kurt Schweitz/Samuel Peters (bass); Kyle Swan (drums); Kyle Asche (guitar on 3 tks).

An interesting concept album by a fine Chicago based trumpet player and composer who, on this his sixth album, charts his musical journey from the past to the present in the form of original compositions along with his arrangements of some modern jazz standards which have punctuated Rutz's journey.

He gets a modern sound with phrasing to match. And he can play a ballad - can he not! On Lil Hardin Armstrong's composition Just For a Thrill Rutz gives a master class in lyricism that the composer's husband would have struggled to better.

In Cassity he has a sympathetic front line partner. Her pedigree is of the highest degree. On tenor or alto she swings like nobody's business or, to be more precise, like Joe Henderson on the track dedicated to him - Short Story.

Pianist Ruiz is another hard swinger who, along with the alternating bassists and drummer Swan, drive things along. Guitarist Asche only appears on three tracks but he makes his presence felt. This is quite an album. A prologue, an epilogue and three chapters in between (12 tracks in all) ensures that the content lives up to the title.
