This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Tom Atkinson & co. celebrating the music of Pharoah Sanders @ The Globe - Jan. 19

A few months ago Tom Atkinson got together with a few mates to play the music of Pharoah Sanders. This evening they did it all again and despite the wintry weather a good crowd turned out to listen. The Globe's downstairs radiator was turned up to 11, to coin a phrase...'to hell with poverty'! And so to the music, ninety minutes, no interval, straight through. Twenty minutes in, it had been a slow start, low key introductory solos from Atkinson, Sue Ferris (flute) and arco bass from the double bass playing Jude Murphy. 

For a while the horns - Ferris and Josh Bentham - had little to do until Atkinson upped the tempo, Ferris, now on tenor, that's more like it! As the set unwound we heard more and more of the lyrical side of P. Sanders, the quintet in and out of swing time sections. To close out the set, Africa and The Creator Has a Master Plan. An hour and a half, not a word from Atkinson until the end with a perfunctory name check of his band mates, welcome to Tom Atkinson's world of Pharoah Sanders.
