Tony Bevan (saxophones); Williwaw (amplified ukulele) + a trio of trios
It sounded interesting enough for a Thursday evening punt - free jazz saxophone titan paired with a ukulele. The duet of Tony Bevan and Williwaw (aka Bill Whitmer) turned out to be a beauty. Bevan on saxophones played with a warmth, with tone and accessibility that was quite invigorating but the revelation had to be from Williwaw on ukulele. Anyone expecting a rendition of songs like 3 wheels on your wagon would have been disappointed, everyone else would have been blown away. The amplified ukulele provided a soundscape of previously unheard sounds almost harp like in quality and the pairing with Bevan’s saxophone playing produced a fascinating, rewarding and moving set.
The second half of this Thursday Night Prayer Meetings consisted of a trio of trios selected at random out of a hat by organiser Tom Dixon. I thought I would give the first trio a chance and then sneak out politely but I was engrossed by all 3 very different performances. One of the trios had someone sat on the floor playing amongst other thing a frying pan! The final trio featured Tony Bevan, a wild drummer and a primal screaming vocalist – music to one's ears.
