This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Maurice Summerfield and Gene Bertoncini

I have known Gene for quite a few years (he is a year or so older than me) although we have been out of touch.  His style was one I admired and tried to emulate.  I also changed over to playing jazz on a nylon strung fingerstyle guitar in the 1970s.  Gene's duo records with bassist Michael Moore at that time inspired Alan Collins and I to play in a similar style duo (at a weekly private session in my home) many years ago.

As it turned out Gene knew my late friend (the great Argentinian guitarist) Jorge Morel.  They lived near each other in New York and Jorge introduced me to Gene.  The photo is of Gene (left) and I dining at an Italian restaurant in New York in the 1980s.  Gene is a true gentleman and this is reflected in his tasteful musicianship.
