This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Album review: Caleb Wheeler Curtis - Heatmap

Caleb Wheeler Curtis (alto sax); Orrin Evans (piano); Eric Revis (bass); Gerald Cleaver (drums).

To quote from the blurb: a heatmap is a way to show where the action is happening.

Well, there is certainly plenty action happening on this, the third album by fiery alto saxist Curtis. He's blistering, he's paintstripping and, when the music demands it, he's also tender and introspective. However, when the chips are down he goes for the jugular. Not a man to meet at a jam session in a dark alley or at a Wednesday night prayer meeting unless, like Curtis, you have Evans, Revis and Cleaver in your corner.

Indeed, the pianist offers a degree of stability by way of contrast to the leader's sometimes virulent outbursts and when the storm subsides such as on Trees for the Forest the pair offer a study in tranquility. Bass and drums are also on the money and all tracks were composed by Curtis.

One of those albums that make you want to  hear the band live. Ideally at the Globe in Newcastle (UK). Unfortunately, a few thousand miles (and dollars) make this an unlikely occurrence so, for those not in the close proximity of the Jazz Gallery, NYC on July 15 where the launch is taking place they will just have to buy the album and, if enough people do, maybe one day the unit  will make it to the UK!- Lance
