The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Album review: Beverley Church Hogan - Sweet Invitation

Beverley Church Hogan (vocals); John Proulx (piano); Bob Sheppard (tenor sax); Grant Geissman (guitar); Lyman Medeiros (bass); Clayton Cameron/Dean Koba (drums); Kevin Winard (perc).

Three years ago I enthused over BCH's debut album - Can't Get Out of This Mood. I loved it and, erroneously, assumed that that was it. In my defence, I based my assumption on the fact that she was 83 years old at the time. Most singers, by the time they reach such venerable status are either retired or well over the hill.

Now, three years on, Beverley Church Hogan, on this follow up album, has a long way to go before she crests the summit. In fact in mountaineering terms she's just passed base camp and is heading up to where the air is rarefied with a host of wannabees trying to keep up with her.

Of course, as Sir Edmund Hillary knew, to climb Everest you need a team of Sherpas and Beverley's team is as strong as anyone's with Proulx providing the perfect accompaniment as well as soloing and doing the arrangements. Sheppard solos on tenor (maybe alto too?) and slots in some sympathetic obligati complementing the vocals. Geissman also pitches in effectively over a lightly flowing rhythm section.

A great selection of songs. To hear our 86 years old confessing to infidelity on Don'cha go Way Mad must surely cause some senior citizens to wonder if 'the missus' really did go to late night bingo!

I jest, Bev is only 86 in years. Voicewise she's half - maybe even a quarter - of that age. Wonderful! Lance

Available Café Pacific Records.

Don'cha go Way Mad; Falling in Love With Love; Here's That Rainy Day; I Got Lost in His Arms; Invitation; I'm Just Foolin' Myself; What a Way to go; When
October Goes; Why Try to Change me Now?
