This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. The Arun Ghosh Quartet @ the Globe - April 30

International Jazz Day! New Orleans' style brass bands would be parading along Pilgrim St. the  pubs would be full of swing dancers and there would be sax players busking on every corner of Tyneside's first city. Well, er, it didn't exactly quite work out like that. It was raining and NUFC were losing a game of football. 

However, all was not lost. The Jazz Coop, Jazz North East and Gem Arts combined to put on a day that commemorated, not only IJD but, also, the eighth anniversary of the Coop's formation.

Such an occasion deserved something special and boy did they deliver something special!

I'm not sure if this was a jazzy rock gig or a rocky jazz gig - probably somewhere in the middle but who cared? The standing ovation at the end was the very least they deserved.

The seats were set out theatre style and still some peeps had to stand - that's how busy it was.

It began with Ghosh clarineting his way to the stage playing Johnny Cash's Ring of Fire before launching into two set's of originals interspersed with his engaging patter.

He played, he danced, he involved the audience who happily went along with the hand-clapping and the eastern chanting.

Seshasayee had only just joined the band but it didn't show. Barras was a rock on bass guitar whilst Walsh's drumming a wonder to behold.

Earlier in the day, Ghosh held a family show which covered all ages. I wasn't there but, with his engaging personality, it couldn't have been anything other than a success.

This was followed, upstairs, with sets by Swing Bridge, Patrick Cromb and Friends and the Blue Jazz Quartet plus a jam session.

A highly successful and enjoyable International Jazz Day - Lance
