This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Album review: Jim Self/John Chiodini - Hangin' Out

Jim Self (tuba); John Chiodini (guitar) + Scott Whitfield (trombone); David Angel (baritone sax); Tom Peterson (tenor sax); Ron Stout (trumpet, flugel).

A pleasing album that doesn't threaten the walls of Jericho concentrating instead on the more melodic aspects. Tuba and guitar may seem like strange bedfellows but the combination works well with Self providing both rhythmic support and lyrical solos - yes tubas can play lyrical! Chiodini chords and solos impeccably - no drums needed.

The double magic shines through on Hangin' Out; Spain; Dindi; Sir Duke; Felicidade; Up Jumped Spring; Model I Tease; Just the Way You Are.

The various guests add an extra dimension on their featured tracks: Whitfield on his own Lydian Afternoon; Petterson on his composition Another Thing; Angel scores with a beautiful take on Everything Happens to me and Stout gives us I Walk a Little Faster. All six jam on It Could Happen to You.
