This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Ten of the best from the pre-rock era - 1: Humphrey Lyttleton

Russell's post on what must surely have been a fantastic session at the 100 Club brought back a few memories of those days when I'd be hanging out at the 100 or, round the corner at, was it the Blue Posts? It was a long time ago and, as, back then, none of the London jazz clubs sold liquor, it meant that, come interval time it was forget your soft drink and hope to arrive at the pub before the band did. It was on just such an occasion that I copped for Buck Clayton's autograph! - I still have it somewhere among my souvenirs.

Buck wasn't playing that night - he'd just dropped by to say hello to Humph.

This was the best of Humph's bands - how could it not be with a front line of Tony Coe, Jimmy Skidmore and Joe Temperley on saxes? They pointed Humph and old school trombonist Johnny Picard towards the future. Forget about the early trad sides this edition of the Humphrey Lyttleton Band was the pinnacle of British mainstream jazz. Lance
