This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Excuse me...are you a musician?

Strolling along Euston Road the other day, a voice from behind said: Are you a musician? Looking over my shoulder, a woman wearing a face mask was walking briskly by. No, I replied. Why do you ask? Pointing at my t-shirt she said: Oh, I thought you might be a musician. Ah, my Danish Radio Big Band t-shirt, picked up many moons ago at the band's concert at Whitley Bay Playhouse. On that memorable occasion the band's special guest was none other than valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer!

The woman behind the mask? Jacqui Dankworth! We stood and chatted for a couple of minutes recalling Jacqui's concert appearances 'up north' at Durham's Gala Theatre and Sage Gateshead, my memories of Wavendon. And off Jacqui went, an early morning rehearsal ahead of her.  Russell
