Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Sunday Service: Adrian Cox & Nils Solberg with Kate Daniels - Oct. 17

Adrian Cox (clarinet, vocals); Nils Solberg (guitar, vocals); Kate Daniels (vocals)

Another in Adrian Cox's ongoing series of Sunday live streams. This afternoon our man was joined by Nils Solberg and Kate Daniels. The early part of today's sermon fell victim to the frailties of the internet - frozen screen etc. After a while things settle down - for a while! - enabling our clarinetist's large online following to enjoy an hour or so of top class jazz. Cox and Solberg shared vocal duties. Mid point in the set vocalist Kate Daniels joined the boys to sing a couple of numbers. Ms Daniels sat between the two principals to sing What a Little Moonlight Can Do and They Can't Take That Away from Me. What we heard sounded just fine, although Daniels would have been heard to better effect on a mic.

The gremlins held largely at bay, the boys pressed on, Solberg singing Chicago and The Frim-Fram Sauce (superb clarinet solo) either side of Cox delivering a marvellous Stardust (clarinet and vocals). To close today's sermon, the boys took it out on When the Saints Go Marching In. Oh, yes! Russell
