The Concrete Blonde is the third in Michael Connelly's series involving Los Angeles cop Harry Bosch. This one came out in 1994 and is, in the main a courtroom drama where Bosch is accused of shooting an unnamed man suspected of being The Dollmaker - a serial killer who tarts up the corpses of his female victims with lipstick, mascara etc.
It's a compelling read with all sorts of twists and turns before truth will out.
The jazz references aren't as frequent as they sometimes are in the series although Bosch does spend an evening downing double Jack Ds with beer chasers in a bar whilst listening to a quartet playing a Strayhorn set that included Lush Life and Blood Count. He then drives over to his girl friend Sylvia's place and, fortunately, doesn't have a drunk driving rap to add to his troubles.
If you like your crime fiction to have a little jazz in it then Connelly's your man. - Lance
