This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Preview: Michael Feinstein @ Sage Gateshead (Oct. 22)

It was back in 1994 when cable television finally arrived on our street. Suddenly, over night we had trillions of channels to choose from. That most of these channels were rubbish is neither here nor there as there was one weekly programme that shone like a beacon above the rest. I think it may have been on NPR but I'm not sure. What I am sure about was the performers and, in particular, singer, pianist, music historian, author Michael Feinstein.

In a show hosted by the late Larry King, Feinstein would sing, play and chat about the great American composers - the Gershwins, Berlin, Kern etc - it was just about as good as it gets and it didn't end there. For three decades he has kept the flame of the GASbook alight receiving many prestigious nominations and awards.

Next Friday (Oct. 22) at 8:00pm at Sage Gateshead Michael Feinstein makes a return visit. This really is one concert that is truly unmissable and, not surprisingly, seats are going fast see: Sage Gateshead. Listen to It's Only a Paper Moon. Lance
