Bebop Spoken There

Steve Coleman: ''If you don't keep learning, your mind slows down. Use it or lose it''. (DownBeat, January 2025).

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Farewell to Ron Goodall

Just received the sad news that Ron Goodall passed away this morning. Ron, a well-respected bass guitarist in the York area played in many bands including the Mardi Gras Jazz Band and Bejazzled. Son of guitarist the late Bob Goodall, Ron, who hasn't been in the best of health for some years also gigged on occasion with pianist Jeremy McMurray and trumpet player John Cowan.

Although I only met him on the one occasion, I had an immediate reaction - a gentleman. Something that was confirmed in  the many conversations I've had over the years with his sister Liz who is, herself, a jazz fan and a staunch supporter of BSH. Liz was, in fact, one of the first to post a comment in our very early days.

Our condolences go out to his wife Jane (pictured with Ron), Liz and all his family.

May he Rest In Peace.

Very sad news about Ron Goodall passing away this morning. He was a great musician and friend who I had the good fortune to meet and gig with in the York and Leeds area many years ago. A real gentleman who had a generous spirit and lovely sense of humour. He will be greatly missed. RIP Ron.
