This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Eddie Blair (1927 - Dec. 26, 2020)

It's just been brought to my attention that British trumpet legend Eddie Blair passed away on December 26, 2020. Simon Spillett has posted a well-researched loving tribute on LondonJazz News that could be the definitive work on a musician well-remembered  by those of us "of a certain age".

I first heard him in the unlikely surrounds of the Memorial Hall in Wallsend where the Dankworth Seven were playing at a dance. I don't think they went down very well with the dancers but to us jazz fans hanging around the bandstand it was magic. Who wanted to dance with girls when they could hear the likes of Johnny on alto, Don Rendell on tenor, Eddie Harvey on trombone and, of course, Eddie Blair on trumpet? After all, there was always the future Mrs Dankworth up there with the boys.

I heard him again at Newcastle City Hall, first with Dankworth's big band and later, on several occasions with the Ted Heath Band. Although Bobby Pratt and Bert Ezard were the ones who brought the house down with their high note pyrotechnics and Duncan Campbell scored with his comedy routines it was Eddie Blair who provided the jazz.

After the Heath band faded from the scene in many ways so did Eddie Blair - at least from a touring band point of view. I'm thankful to Simon for filling us in on his subsequent career and recordings.

Eddie Blair was 93.
